Lisbon Airport to the Algarve

Updated · by GetVoolo, Lisbon

Short answer: it's about 277 km, 2 h 45 min by car. The train leaves Oriente about 5 times a day (≈€24–34, ≈3–3.5 h to Faro), but Albufeira's station is 7 km outside town. Coaches are frequent and cheap (≈€10–25). A private driver takes you door to door with no changes (GetVoolo estimate €232–€314), which pays off most for groups and families. If the Algarve is your only stop, compare direct flights to Faro too.

By train, step by step

  1. From arrivals, take the red metro line three stops to Oriente (there are lifts).
  2. At Oriente, take the Alfa Pendular (about 3 h to Faro) or the Intercidades (about 3 h 30 min). There are about 5 departures a day, and a reserved seat comes with every ticket.
  3. The train stops at Pinhal Novo, Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé and Faro. For Portimão or Lagos, change at Tunes for the regional train.
  4. Albufeira-Ferreiras station is about 7 km north of town. An Uber/Bolt costs about €6–9, or there are local buses (lines 5 and 11). In summer, book your ride as soon as you step off the train.

Tickets are sold on cp.pt; booking ahead can be much cheaper. With so few departures a day, check the timetable before you leave the airport.

By coach

FlixBus leaves from the Oriente bus terminal, and Rede Expressos mostly from Sete Rios (Jardim Zoológico metro station, blue line; from the airport, change at São Sebastião). The fastest services reach Albufeira in about 2 h 45 min. On FlixBus, booking early gets tickets for a few euros. In Albufeira, Rede Expressos arrives at the bus terminal, about 1.8 km from the Old Town.

By car

The drive takes about 2.5–3 hours on the A2, which is tolled. Once in the Algarve, the A22 (Via do Infante) has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. After a long flight, think twice before driving three hours straight from the airport.

When a private driver makes sense

  • Groups and families: the price is per car, so split four or more ways it comes close to the train, with no changes. Vans take groups of up to 7.
  • An address away from the stations: resorts, villas and towns like Lagos or Carvoeiro mean a taxi at the end of the train or coach trip anyway.
  • Flights with unpredictable times: the driver tracks your flight, and the free 60-minute wait starts when you land.
  • Travelling solo on a budget: the coach or train makes more sense. We’d rather tell you that straight.

Should you fly into Faro instead?

If the Algarve is your only destination, compare flights into Faro airport too: they can save you three hours on the road. Coming via Lisbon makes sense when the Lisbon flight is much cheaper, when you are combining Lisbon and the Algarve in one trip, or when there is no direct flight to Faro from your city.
