Lisbon Airport to Sintra with luggage
Updated · by GetVoolo, Lisbon
Short answer: with suitcases, a car is simplest. It takes about 40 minutes with no changes. A taxi costs ≈€50–70 and Uber/Bolt from ≈€25, more when busy. The metro and train cost ≈€4.30 and take ≈80 min, one change, which is fine with one case each. In Sintra's historic centre, since July 2026, taxis and ride-hail cars must drop you at designated points, which may not be your front door.
Your options with luggage
| Option | Price | Time | With luggage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro + train | ≈€4.30 | ≈80 min, one change | Fine with one case each; lifts at the airport and Oriente, then over 1 km from Sintra station into town |
| Taxi | ≈€50–70 | ≈35–50 min | Door to door, except in the historic centre (designated drop-off points) |
| Uber / Bolt | from ≈€25, more when busy | ≈35–50 min | As taxi; choose a larger car class if you have several big cases |
| Pre-booked driver (GetVoolo estimate) | €38–€45 | ~40 min | Meets you inside arrivals; tell the driver your bag count, or choose a van |
Taxi and Uber/Bolt prices are approximate and rise at night, at weekends and at busy times. GetVoolo instant prices are fixed when you book, tolls included; if you ask drivers for offers instead, they set the price.
By metro and train, step by step
- From arrivals, take the red metro line three stops to Oriente. There are lifts at both stations.
- At Oriente, change to the CP suburban train on the Sintra line. Trains start here, so you can usually get a seat and keep your bags beside you.
- Sintra is the last stop, about 47 minutes later. Taxis wait outside the station, and Uber/Bolt work here too.
- The historic centre is more than a kilometre from the station and uphill in places. With heavy bags, take a taxi for the last stretch.
You pay for the metro and the train separately, with the same reusable card. Avoid the evening rush hour if you can.
Drop-off rules in the historic centre (since July 2026)
From 8 July 2026, Sintra's council limited traffic in the historic centre. Taxis and ride-hailing cars can still enter, but they must pick up and drop off at designated points, not anywhere on the street. The first points named include Praça Dr. Virgílio Horta, Praça Sousa Brandão, Praça Carlos França and Volta do Duche. Cars can no longer drop off directly at Quinta da Regaleira; Volta do Duche is the official drop-off for it.
If you're staying in the centre: ask your accommodation which drop-off point is closest and how far it is on foot, and pass that on to your driver. Staying outside the centre? A car can normally take you to the door.
Leaving luggage in Sintra
Checking in later, or visiting on your way to somewhere else? Sintra station has some lockers, but they fill up. Several luggage-storage services work with shops and cafés near the station and in town, and you can book them online by the day. Palace visits involve steep paths and crowded buses, so it's easier without suitcases.
